Cycling tour along the Aar, Orke and Eder

including culinary highlights

Today I would like to introduce you to a bike tour a little away from the Edersee that I did with my partner in the summer. We did the tour with e-mountain bikes, but it can certainly be done with other, reasonably stable bikes. The start and finish of the circular tour was the national park train station in Herzhausen. Since it mostly goes along the water, there are only a few inclines to climb. However, there are also a few more challenging trail areas and three bridges over which the bike has to be pushed or carried. Of course, you can also do the tour in the opposite direction.

From the start at the Herzhausen National Park station, the route went through the forest and even through a small ford in the direction of Immighausen. From there, through agricultural land north of Goddelsheim into the Aar valley. East of the Aar, the route continued towards Dalwigksthal, but unfortunately the last 1,5 km to there had to be ridden on the road (L617). From Dalwigksthal, the route continued along the Orke past Reckenberg Castle to Niederorke. Be careful, on this section of the route there are 3 bridges to cross, and you have to push or carry your bike. There are also narrow trail sections where you should be particularly considerate of hikers. From Niederorke, the route continues to Ederbringhausen, where the Orke flows into the Eder and you can find a connection to the Eder cycle path, which you can use to cycle comfortably back to the starting point.

You can also find the exact route in our tour portal under the following Link.

On Sunday afternoons, the old mill in Dalwigksthal is a great place to stop off. There are, for example, very tasty, home-made cakes. There is a lot to discover in the historic mill and you can buy regional products. There are also good places to stop off in other places along the tour, such as Oberorke, Schmittlotheim, Herzhausen and the Kellerwald National Park Center.

Once you are over the mountain at Goddelsheim, the tour takes you through the beautiful valleys of Aar and Orke and back along the Eder to the starting point. The tour along the waters is pleasant to ride, the scenery is very beautiful and far away from the hustle and bustle. With the beautiful waters, a few bridges and Rockenberg Castle, there is a lot to see. There are also a few places to stop for refreshments. The home-made cake in the old mill in Dalwigksthal is a particularly good option on Sunday afternoons.

“With its diverse possibilities, the Edersee offers almost everyone the chance to spend a weekend, an interesting holiday or their whole life.”
