Visitor Center Edersee

Welcome to the new Edersee Visitor Center - The ground floor contains the entrance area and the guest area and tourist information. At the counter, which is directly visible when entering the building, you will receive personal advice from our employees. Displays on the walls inform you about what the region has to offer, based on the different themes of "Active at the Lake", "Active on Land" and "Nature", which our Edersee region stands for. An interactive terminal that lets you choose the stories yourself is also available. The highlight in the guest area is the large panoramic window with a view of the dam. "Wall chairs" are ready for you and invite you to take a short break. Also integrated into the guest area is a shop selling souvenirs and a brochure display with the most important information about the region. Wooden benches in the entrance area invite you to linger and allow you to take a short break while you wait to enter the "Mythos Edersee".

“Myth Edersee”

An exciting, animated journey through time

A visit to “Mythos Edersee” is like diving into another world. A world full of history and emotions. Imagine entering the basement of the visitor center and immediately being enveloped in a mystical atmosphere. The air is filled with a quiet hum and all around you, historical images and animated video sequences begin to dance on the walls.

The journey begins in the imperial era, and as you stroll through the room you feel as if you are gliding through time. The projections are so vivid that you can almost feel the breath of the past on your skin. It is as if the past is within your reach. There are new details to discover in every corner of the room. In one corner you can see village life in the 1920s, in another the dramatic flooding of the Eder valley after the dam was built. It is incredible how the stories come to life - the people, their fates, their hopes and dreams. You can almost feel the excitement and pride of the locals when the dam was completed, but also the sadness and pain when their home village had to give way to the floods.

Here, modern technology and innovative storytelling have come together to create an unforgettable experience. The sensory impressions are overwhelming - the images, the sounds, the feeling of being a part of this story. You feel connected to the past and at the same time are fascinated by the bridge to the present that "Mythos Edersee" builds. Take your time and immerse yourself in this emotional journey through time. Get involved and enjoy the moment. It is an experience that you won't forget in a hurry.

Architecture & Function

The new building rises like a tower.

Visitor center with tourist information, animated journey through time “Mythos Edersee” and attractive outdoor area: A section through the century-old building brings the history of the Edersee to life.

Architecturally, the building is based on the barrier wall and is therefore structurally special with a regional reference. The concept idea emerged from the symbolic cutting out of a section of the Eder Dam. The visitor center is divided into four areas: The foyer is located in the “section through the wall”. The outdoor area invites you to linger and is a meeting place. The large steps provide seating and from the terrace the visitor overlooks the lake and the wall. The tourist information center and the panorama lounge are located on the ground floor. The production on the history of the Edersee and the sanitary facilities are located in the basement.

The interior design is also based on the barrier wall: the floor and walls have a stone look and directly in the entrance the view goes up into the open tower. The feeling arises of standing in the mighty barrier wall itself. The wooden elements represent nature, which is of particular importance in the Edersee region.

The wall is the inspiration:

Construction of the visitor center began in 2021. The construction phase was completed in March 2023, so the visitor center opened for our guests in April 2023. The building was planned by the architectural firm ChristophHesse Architekten from Korbach.
