Visitor Center Edersee

Welcome to the new Edersee visitor center - the entrance area and at the same time the guest area and tourist information are located on the ground floor. You will receive personal advice from our employees at the counter, which is directly visible when you enter the building. Displays on the walls inform you about what the region has to offer, based on the various subject areas “Active on the Lake”, “Active on Land” and “Nature”, which our Edersee region stands for. An interactive terminal that lets you choose the stories yourself is also available. The highlight in the guest area is the large panoramic window with a view of the barrier wall. “Wall chairs” are ready for you and invite you to take a short break. Also integrated into the guest area is a shop offering souvenirs and a brochure display with the most important information from the region. Wooden benches in the entrance area invite you to linger and take a short break while waiting to enter the “Myth of Edersee”.

“Myth Edersee”

An exciting, animated journey through time

“Mythos Edersee” is a new way of telling stories and invites you to immerse yourself in the Eder Valley’s journey through time in the basement of the Edersee Visitor Center. Historical, sometimes animated, images and video sequences from the imperial era to the present are projected onto the walls.

Take your time and allow yourself to experience an emotional journey through time. Walk through the room and become part of the story, because a different detail can be seen in every corner. Enjoy the moment when innovative storytelling, a wide range of sensory impressions and modern technology are combined to create an unforgettable experience.

Architecture & Function

The new building rises like a tower.

Visitor center with tourist information, animated time travel “Myth of Edersee” and attractive outdoor area: A section through the century-old building makes the history of the Edersee come alive.

Architecturally, the building is based on the barrier wall and is therefore structurally special with a regional reference. The concept idea emerged from the symbolic cutting out of a section of the Eder Dam. The visitor center is divided into four areas: The foyer is located in the “section through the wall”. The outdoor area invites you to linger and is a meeting place. The large steps provide seating and from the terrace the visitor overlooks the lake and the wall. The tourist information center and the panorama lounge are located on the ground floor. The production on the history of the Edersee and the sanitary facilities are located in the basement.

The interior design is also based on the barrier wall: the floor and walls have a stone look and directly in the entrance the view goes up into the open tower. The feeling arises of standing in the mighty barrier wall itself. The wooden elements represent nature, which is of particular importance in the Edersee region.

The wall is the inspiration:

Construction of the visitor center began in 2021. The construction phase was completed in March 2023, so the visitor center opened for our guests in April 2023. The building was planned by the architectural firm ChristophHesse Architekten from Korbach.
